Website Basics: Part 2

You've thought about it and you decide to get a website after all! But now what do you do? This article will help you get started with your website.
  1. Site name:
Ah yes, the name. This is the first thing you should think up once you have decided to start your website. The name is important, because it should be something you might like. Sometimes if your name is specific, it better be about related to your content! For instance, you would not want to call your website Time Machine Graphics if it's not even a graphics site! The name doesn't have to reflect on your website, because it can be random like Black Star and be anything from a collectives site to a gallery. You also don't want to get a name that's too popular, like Starry Night.
  2. Originality:
This might be the biggest factor of them all. You do not want to copy someone else's styles and ideas because that is theft and can result in your website getting deleted. If you do get inspired to make something from another website, be sure to give them credit and make sure that it does not look exactly the same! Sometimes it is hard to be original, especially when people copy your stuff! There are ways you can be original though, and this would include not using the images everyone is using for graphics or writing a tutorial on the same things everyone is.
  3. Editor:
There are a lot of ways you can edit your website. If you are on a free host, you usually just create your pages there but some like to use FTP. This requires you to have an editor where you enter the coding (and later upload), so which one you use might important. The one I recommend is Notepad, because it is easy and simple. You might not want to use Microsoft Word or anything related because it does not understand coding and you cannot save your files as .html, .php, etc.
  4. Web host:
Who is going to host your website? Will it be Free Webs, or Geocities? Each host has it's ups and downs so you have to look at both and take the one that is more right for you. Be careful! Do not get confused between a free host and one where you have to pay. The second one is always better, but it comes with a fee. Free hosts are recommended for you, especially if this is your first website. In my opinion, the best one would be Free Webs (freewebs.com) because you have no ads (free hosts like to add this) and you can upload 50 files with any amount of space. I doubt you will have over that amount of pages when you start out, so it's all the better.
