Website Basics: Part 3

What good is a website if no one can see it? Here we talk about all the ways you can gain hits, and lose them.

Gaining Hits:

  1. Affiliates/Link exchange: These are powerful allies that link your site somewhere on theirs, and in return you link them back. Most people like to affiliate with sites that have similair content, although this is not always the case. You should be careful though! You don't want to get affiliated with a lot of sites and do it for the hits, because that is rude and if your affiliates find out they will dislike you. Some sites only have as many as five affiliates, but they get plenty of hits.
  2. Topsites: This is the place where you have a lot of sites competing to be the top. (thus the name topsites) Topsites are very useful, becausae not only do your visitors get to vote for you, but other people might get interested in visiting your site too! Like with affiliates, you do not want to overdo it and join a lot, because it does not guarantee you getting a lot of hits.
  3. Plugboard: A plugboard is something that can be set up on a website can set up where you "plug" your site and people visit it. This is nifty, but there is no guarantee your site will stay plugge for long (depending on how popular the site where you plugged is) or if people click on your link. It is also not a good idea to plug your site more than once at a time, because the webmaster will most likely remove your link.
  4. Tagboard: This is a place where visitors comment on the site they're visiting. You can leave a link with your name so that if someone clicks on it they will be taken to your site. :) If your message is creative and nice, the webmaster themselves might get interested in visiting your site and becoming affiliates! However, you do not want to advertise your site on purpose since that will make everyone mad.
Losing Hits:
  1. No content: You do not want people to know about your website too soon! If you have little or no content and are already trying to get noticed, people will get bored easily and leave possibly never coming back again! Having too many blank and "Coming soon" pages is also a bad thing, because it annoys people and they expect that if there is a link, the page exists.
  2. Theft: Nobody likes a thief, so make sure that you do not steal anything. A lot of things can go wrong too. You can get caught and get your site deleted or frozen, and people will flame you (say nasty things) as well as spam. If you do this on several occasions, your name will start to be remebered and people will know to watch out for you and not trust you when you say you made something.
  3. Foul language: The last thing you want to do is swear, especially when your site is supposed to be "all ages". Having swearing will greatly upset a lot of people so they might not want to visit your site in the future. Doing stupid things like sensoring it by saying *beep* every few words also gets annoying, because you might as well be swearing! In other words, just don't do it.
  4. No updates: A dead site cannot expand on it's content, thus when it should have grown it did not. You should update your site at least once a week, so the visitors know that you actually care about the site. Putting it on extremely long hiatuses is also a bad thing, because it could mean that the site is dead as well. A layout change should take no more than a week. I should know because it never took me more than three days!
These are just a few ways that you can gain or lose hits, but I hope they help!
